COLUMBRETES ISLAND´S HISTORY

The Columbretes Islands are the most unique archipelago of the Valencian Community and one of the insular spaces of greater ecological interest of the Mediterranean. They are located about 54 miles from Valencia and are formed by the islands of Columbrete Grande, La Horadada, La Ferrera and El Bergantín.Its original name of Ophiusa or Columbraría comes from the first Greek and Roman navigators, surprised to see the great abundance of snakes that were in the island. But do not worry because they were extinguished in the mid-nineteenth century during the construction of the lighthouse. Due to its high ecological value and its impressive seabed, it was declared a Natural Park and Marine Reserve. Also the Columbretes represent the greatest example of volcanism in the Valencian Community. If you add the circumstance of being in a marine environment, you get a unique landscape in which they stand out: the Large Columbrete formed by several chained craters, El Mascarat covered with basaltic remains and The Bergantin that with its 32 meters of height represents the remains of the central chimney of a volcano, although from a distance it makes us look like the sail of a ship.In the islets nest colonies of species as rare as Eleonora's hawk, Adouin's gull and the gray shearwater. The transparent waters and the great diversity of sea beds make a visit to this archipelago even more interesting. The remoteness of the coast and the protection of this park allow a great concentration and diversity of species.
